At Fútbol Femenino Garabito, we are privileged to witness countless stories of resilience, but few are as compelling as that of our beloved coach, Greivin Moscoso. His life’s journey is a powerful testament to the transformative power of sports, faith, and community.
A Natural Talent
Greivin Moscoso’s connection with soccer began at a tender age. “From the moment I was born, God told me to play,” he often recounts. His natural talent for the game became evident early on, leading him to play in high school and beyond. Despite his undeniable skill, life off the field took a dark turn.
Struggles with Addiction
Moscoso’s early years were a tumultuous mix of soccer and substance abuse. At just ten years old, he tried cigarettes for the first time, a habit that quickly escalated to marijuana and other drugs. His promising academic and athletic potential was overshadowed by his growing addiction. While he maintained discipline on the field, his social life was marred by poor choices and a lack of direction.
Missed Opportunities
At sixteen, Moscoso was approached by the prestigious national first-division team, Saprissa. However, unwilling to abandon his lifestyle, he turned down the opportunity, choosing instead to continue his self-destructive path. His life spiraled further into illegal activities, leading to a harsh reality of homelessness and despair.
A Turning Point
At his lowest point, Moscoso found himself destitute and alone, surviving off garbage and sleeping on sidewalks. It was during this period of intense suffering that he experienced what he describes as divine intervention. “God spoke to me one night and told me to go find help,” he recalls. The next day, he attended a church service in Tarcoles, where he was overcome with a profound sense of peace. From that moment, he vowed never to use drugs again.
A New Mission
Supported by the church community, Moscoso began rebuilding his life. His next divine message was clear: “Help them go where you didn’t go and make sure they don’t go where you went.” This directive led him to coach the neighborhood soccer team, starting with just 36 young girls. “God told me to coach them well, take care of them, and guide them,” he says.
Building a Legacy
Under Moscoso’s leadership, the small team grew exponentially. Over the past 12 years, more than 1,000 girls have passed through the program, many achieving remarkable success. National championships have been won, and several players have earned scholarships to universities, elevating their families economically and setting new standards for future generations.
Beyond Soccer
For Moscoso, coaching is about more than just soccer. It’s about instilling values, providing education, and offering a safe space away from the dangers of the streets. “My goal has always been to help the young generation and improve our society,” he states. His dedication has not only transformed his own life but has also created a ripple effect, impacting countless others.
