At H-E-A-D Foundation, we are proud to share the remarkable story of one of our brightest young talents, Nubia Villalobos. Her journey is a testament to perseverance, talent, and the transformative power of sports.
Early Beginnings on Isla Chira
Nubia was born on Isla Chira, a small island in Costa Rica with around 1500 residents. Life on the island is simple, and most inhabitants rarely leave. Nubia, however, had a different destiny. Raised by a single mother alongside two older and two younger siblings, her mother believed that soccer could offer Nubia a better future. From an early age, Nubia displayed a natural talent for the game, playing with adults and holding her own despite her young age. Her unique ability to use both feet with equal strength and skill set her apart.
A Search for Opportunity
Determined to find a platform for Nubia’s talent, her mother traveled off the island in search of a soccer organization that could support her daughter’s growth. Despite visiting many organizations, they faced indifference until they arrived in Jaco and met with Fútbol Femenino Garabito. Our founder of the H-E-A-D Foundation happened to be present and immediately recognized Nubia’s passion and potential. He decided to invest in her future, making Nubia the first player sponsored by the H-E-A-D Foundation before it officially existed.
Commitment and Growth
Initially, Nubia traveled by boat and bus on weekends to join practices and games. Her impact was immediate, scoring goals and playing with the U15 team at just 11 years old. In November 2022, her mother asked if Nubia could stay full-time in Jaco to train daily. Our family welcomed her into our home, providing her with the opportunity to focus on both her education and soccer.
Achievements in 2023
Nubia’s first year living full-time with us was filled with incredible accomplishments:
- Played in the National Games tournament with the U18 team and secured 2nd place.
- Excelled in track and field, winning multiple events and competing in the Central American High School Games, where she placed 2nd in the 300 meters.
- Selected for the Costa Rica National Development Soccer Team for under 15, where she scored five goals in her first game.
- Continued to play for Fútbol Femenino Garabito, leading her team to win the National Title for U13 and becoming the leading goal scorer.
Current Success and Future Aspirations
Today, Nubia is leading her U18 team in the National Tournament and is the top scorer for the Costa Rica National U15 team. Living with our family has been a blessing, providing her not only with soccer opportunities but also with a well-rounded life experience. She excels in school, is learning English, and actively gives back to the community.
